Design Plans for LCOS?

I’m going to assume we’re doing a UNIX-like, so is this going to be Linux or BSD based, or are we going so far as to write a new kernel/userspace, etc? Or is it going to be Linux-based? If it’s the latter, can we roll our own PM?

I like the idea of basing it on one of the BSDs if it isn’t an entirely new system. I mean, the license chosen is a BSD license, and the BSDs are awesome. And we don’t have to deal with Linux community drama.

If this is planned to be more of a package to install on an existing target OS, like Lunduke’s FreeDOS tweaks, then I’ll find this project much less compelling.

@lunduke Come on dude, share all the secrets with us.

I just want an OS that’s not run by woke schizzos, and Lunduke is one of the more based people at the top of the community.

Well, I also like the idea of a BSD-based system. However, I think the idea – as it’s been discussed so far – is a system that is a soft-fork of Linux which is probably for the best anyway if we want it to be accessible to more people. The BSDs are great, but their hardware support is way more limited than what Linux offers.

My understanding is @lunduke has more-or-less settled on some combination of Debian and Devuan, in order to avoid systemd.

We’re just waiting for the core of that hybrid to be committed.

I think, that using Debian is not about avoiding systemd. It is about:

  • Having possibility to install LCOS to some Debian based system (like different CPU) where Devuan may not be available yet.
  • Having possibility to install LCOS to Hurd, where are same Debian package names.

Sounds great. Can’t wait.

I am interested to know from @lunduke if he will be supporting other architectures besides amd64.

Do we have an ETA on when the base system will be committed?

::cough:: PowerPC… ::cough::

It would be cool. I’d pull out my PowerMac G3 and try to get it running on it.

There have been not commits of code whatsoever. So far the OS looks like a joke.

Maybe we can solve the FreeBSD driver problems.

Also forgetting of the Linuxisms and going BSD, would be more congruent with the Old School part of the philosophy.
